The ground has no edges

The Heart Sutra says, in the most condensed sentence in the contemplative literature: form is emptiness, emptiness is form.

The reading — Heart Sutra (Prajnaparamita)

Form Is Emptiness

Form is emptiness, emptiness is form. Emptiness is not other than form; form is not other than emptiness. Whatever is form, that is emptiness; whatever is emptiness, that is form.

Therefore, Shariputra, all phenomena are emptiness. They have no characteristics. They are unborn and unceasing. They are not defiled and not without defilement. They do not decrease and do not increase.

Therefore, in emptiness there is no form, no feelings, no perceptions, no mental formations, no consciousness.

Gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā — Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond — Awakening!

The framing

Most readers, the first time, hear this as a contradiction. It is not. The Sanskrit word translated as emptiness, śūnyatā, does not mean nothing. It means empty of separate, fixed existence. A wave is empty of being a wave separate from the ocean, but the wave is still real, and very wet.

What the sutra is doing is the same thing Lao Tzu did, in a different vocabulary. It is denying that the things you see, including yourself, are the standalone units they appear to be. They are forms of a single underlying ground. Read the passage with that single substitution in mind.
