Everything That I Am
There is a specific kind of wall that arrives in real lives, and it arrives more often than most people realize until they have hit it. It is the wall between two people, one of whom has had an experience the other has not had, and neither of whom has the vocabulary to bridge the difference. The person who has had the experience knows something they cannot fully communicate. The person who has not had it is being asked to accept something they cannot verify. Both are behaving reasonably within their own positions. Both are unable to reach the other. The conversation ends where the wall is, and the two people either learn to live with it between them, or one of them stops trying, or the relationship narrows to the topics where the wall does not arrive.
This wall runs through more human relationships than almost any other except grief. It runs between practitioners and their families. It runs between the scientifically trained and the mystically inclined. It runs between the person who has undergone a specific transformation and the person who has not, whatever the nature of the transformation. It runs between anyone who holds knowledge that cannot be demonstrated and anyone who requires demonstration before granting the status of knowledge. Every serious contemplative tradition has faced this wall. Every serious scientific framework has been built, in part, to keep what cannot be verified separate from what counts as knowledge, which is another way of saying that every serious scientific framework has been designed, in part, to hold the wall from one side. The wall is not a failure of communication. It is a feature of how human beings have organized their epistemic lives, and it exists because both sides of it have good reasons for standing where they stand.
In 1985 the astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan published a novel called Contact. In 1997 it was adapted into a film directed by Robert Zemeckis, with Sagan closely involved in its development before his death in 1996. The film's central character is a scientist who has an experience she cannot prove. What the story does with her, and what it declines to do, makes it one of the most honest renderings of this wall that popular culture has produced. It is worth walking through slowly, because the film is doing something more disciplined than it is usually given credit for. It refuses to tell you who is right.
I. What the film is
Ellie Arroway is a radio astronomer working on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, a pursuit that has left her marginalized inside her own field, chasing what most of her colleagues consider a career-ending obsession. This is her ordinary world: rigorous, empirical, committed to evidence, and quietly starved of the recognition she has earned. Then a signal arrives from the vicinity of Vega. It is unmistakably artificial, and buried inside it are the plans for a machine.
What follows has the shape of something older than science fiction. Ellie does not refuse the call. She moves toward the signal immediately. But the refusal is present all around her, in the political interference, in the institutional attempts to seize and shut down her work, in the men who assume the discovery must belong to someone more suitable. She has to overcome an external refusal rather than her own. She crosses a threshold when she enters the machine. And what happens inside it is rendered by the film as roughly eighteen hours of experience: a passage through a constructed wormhole, a strange shoreline, a meeting with what appears to be her dead father, who is not her father but something wearing his form because it was the gentlest available shape. She undergoes something there that she cannot afterward reduce to data. Then she returns.
To everyone observing, the machine did nothing. From the outside, her pod dropped through the apparatus and landed. No time passed. There is no recording, or the recording is static, or the recording is eighteen hours of static that the authorities are not inclined to explain. She experienced a journey. The instruments registered a non-event. And so she is called to testify, to submit what happened to her to a standard of proof it cannot meet, and to account for the gap between what she knows and what she can show.
The film ends without arbitrating. It does not confirm that Ellie went where she believes she went. It does not expose her as deluded. It holds the two readings open and lets the viewer sit inside the same difficulty Ellie is sitting inside. That refusal is the film's central act of integrity, and it is why the story works as a bridge rather than as an argument for one side.
II. Sagan and the responsibility to awe
To understand what Sagan was doing with Ellie, it helps to understand what Sagan spent his life doing with everyone else.
He is commonly remembered as an atheist, though he rejected the label, preferring to describe himself as an agnostic who saw no evidence for the claims of religion and declined to believe without evidence. He was rigorous about this his whole career. He did not soften it late in life. And yet no serious reader of Sagan can miss that his central subject was wonder. Not wonder as decoration on top of the science, but wonder as the thing the science was for. He wrote about the cosmos the way devotional writers write about God, and he did it deliberately, as a specific project aimed at a specific problem.
The problem has a name in psychology. It is called hedonic adaptation, and the video essayist Jason Silva has articulated its stakes as clearly as anyone. The mechanism is simple and merciless. Repeated exposure to the same stimulus renders that stimulus invisible. The brain, having mapped a thing once, stops attending to it. We stop seeing what we see every day. As Silva puts it, working from a line that runs back through scripture, we come to have eyes yet see not, and ears that hear not. The familiar world goes flat. And the flattening is not a moral failure. It is the ordinary operation of a nervous system doing exactly what it evolved to do, which is to conserve attention by ignoring what it has already accounted for.
Sagan understood that a public living under hedonic adaptation to a scientific picture of reality would experience that picture as ordinary, as furniture, as the dull backdrop of a disenchanted world. And he understood that this was a catastrophe, because the picture is not ordinary. It is staggering. The problem was never that the scientific account of the universe lacked grandeur. The problem was that familiarity had blunted the public's capacity to feel the grandeur that was there. So Sagan set himself the task of scrambling that familiarity, of arranging conditions in which a reader might see the actual universe again for the first time.
Consider the pale blue dot. In 1990, at Sagan's urging, the Voyager 1 spacecraft turned its camera back toward home from beyond the orbit of Neptune and photographed the Earth as a single pixel suspended in a shaft of scattered sunlight. Sagan then wrote about that pixel in a way designed to do something precise to the reader's mind. He named everyone who had ever lived, every triumph and atrocity, every saint and every murderer, every configuration of human self-importance, and located all of it on that one mote of dust. The passage is doing exactly what Silva, drawing on Darwin, describes as the natural escalation of attention. Darwin observed that attention, if sudden and close, graduates into surprise, and surprise into astonishment, and astonishment into stupefied amazement. Sagan engineered that graduation on purpose. He took a fact the reader already knew in the abstract, that the Earth is small, and made it sudden and close until it detonated into something the reader could feel. That was his whole method. His career can be read as a sustained campaign to restore awe to a public that had adapted away its capacity for it.
And here is the move that matters for everything the dispatch is trying to hold. What Silva calls scrambling the self so the world can seep in is not a new technology. The contemplative traditions have been doing it for millennia, under other names, toward the same end. What Christian mysticism calls kenosis, the emptying of the self, is a version of it. What Sufism calls fana, the passing away of the ego in the divine, is a version of it. What Zen builds through koan practice, pressing the grasping mind against a question it cannot solve until the grasping exhausts itself, is a version of it. These are technologies for producing a specific state, the state in which the familiar world stops being familiar and is encountered again as overwhelming. Different vocabularies, structurally the same intervention.
Silva names the conclusion of all this directly, and it is the load-bearing claim of this dispatch: we have a responsibility to awe. His full articulation is worth quoting, because it says the thing exactly: "That is what it means to be inspired. The Greek root of the term means to breathe in, to take it in. We fit the universe through our brains, and it comes out in the form of nothing less than poetry. We have a responsibility to awe."
This is not a religious claim. It is a claim about what human consciousness is for. Awe is not an occasional pleasure that visits when circumstances are favorable. It is the proper relationship between a conscious being and a reality encountered clearly, and it has to be actively maintained, because ordinary consciousness will destroy it if permitted. Sagan would have accepted this claim entirely. He would not have used this vocabulary. His own was more restrained. Even the billions and billions everyone attributes to him was a phrase he never said, a parody he eventually adopted in good humor because it caught something true about his method, the insistence on making cosmic scale impossible to ignore. But the underlying commitment was identical. Awe is what conscious beings do when they encounter reality clearly. The failure to feel awe is the failure of consciousness to encounter reality clearly. That is a perennial claim, stated in secular terms by a man who would have rejected the religious version of it.
III. The testimony
The film brings all of this to a point in the scene where Ellie testifies before a congressional committee.
She is asked to account for an experience that left no trace an instrument could confirm. The committee, reasonably, will not accept uncorroborated personal testimony as evidence of an extraordinary event. This is not obstinacy on their part. It is the correct operation of the standard they are charged with holding. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and Ellie has none she can present. She has only what happened to her.
And Ellie, reasonably, cannot in good conscience recant what she knows to be true. She was there. She experienced eighteen hours she cannot dismiss as hallucination, however much easier her life would become if she did. So she is caught in the exact geometry of the wall. She is being asked to submit her experience to a framework that was designed to exclude it. The committee is being asked to accept as evidence something their entire discipline exists to keep out of evidence. Both parties are behaving with integrity inside their own positions. Neither is going to get what they want from the other.
What Ellie finally offers is not proof. It is an account of the experience and an admission that she cannot demonstrate it. She acknowledges that if she were on the other side of the table, she would ask the same skeptical questions being asked of her. And she names, without resolving it, that she was given something she has no way to give to anyone else. The film lets her say this and does not vindicate her. It does not cut to a recording that proves her right. It leaves her testifying into the wall, honest and unverified, and it lets the credits approach with the tension intact.
This is the specific discipline the film models, and it is the discipline this dispatch has to hold as well. Every temptation to score a point for one side against the other has to be resisted. Every phrase that would flatter the empirical reader at the expense of the contemplative one, or the contemplative reader at the expense of the empirical one, has to be reworked. The film earns its power by refusing to arbitrate. So does the position it dramatizes.
IV. What the frameworks are for
The way through the wall, if there is one, is not to declare a winner. It is to notice that the two frameworks on either side of it are not actually competing to answer the same question.
Empirical inquiry and contemplative inquiry are legitimate epistemic orientations, and they are aimed at different targets with different tools. When they collide, it is almost always because one of them has been asked to do the work the other is built for. Empirical method is extraordinarily good at answering what is happening in measurable terms. It is not designed to answer what this experience means to the one having it. The contemplative traditions are extraordinarily good at addressing what an experience means and how a person should integrate it. They are not designed to produce claims that hold up under laboratory replication. When each does its own work, they do not conflict. When either is asked to do the other's work, they conflict everywhere.
The committee questioning Ellie is right that her experience cannot function as scientific evidence. The standard exists for good reasons, and those reasons do not evaporate because the person failing to meet the standard is sincere and rigorous and correct in her own estimation. A framework that admitted uncorroborated testimony as proof would rapidly cease to be able to distinguish anything from anything. The empirical reader who feels the committee is being cold is missing that the coldness is load-bearing.
And Ellie is right that her experience was real, that it changed her, and that the absence of external corroboration does not convert a lived event into nothing. A framework that told her the eighteen hours did not happen because no instrument caught them would be making a claim well outside its own competence. The contemplative reader who feels Ellie is being persecuted is right that something is being denied, but wrong if they conclude that the denial makes the scientific standard illegitimate.
Both are correct. They are correct about different things. The wall stands not because one side is confused but because two valid orientations are being pressed against each other at the one point where their jurisdictions appear to overlap and in fact do not. This is the most careful claim in the dispatch, and it is the one that does the actual bridge work. It asks no one to abandon their framework. It asks only that each notice what its framework is for.
V. Where science has been going
There is a further point that the empirical reader in particular is positioned to appreciate, because it is a fact about the history of their own field rather than an importation from outside it.
Theoretical physics is philosophy in scientific garb. This is not a slight and it is not a smuggling operation. It is simply how the discipline works at its foundations. Every major advance in theoretical physics begins with a philosophical conceptualization and only later arrives at mathematical proof. Einstein did not derive special relativity from an experiment. He conceptualized what it would mean if the speed of light were absolute, held that idea steady in his imagination, and worked out the mathematical consequences of taking it seriously. The mathematics that followed is rigorous. The origin of the mathematics was an act of disciplined philosophical imagination.
His thought experiments deserve the word meditation in its strict contemplative sense. To ride alongside a beam of light and ask what one would see, to imagine a falling elevator and interrogate whether anything inside it could distinguish gravity from acceleration, is to hold a single question in sustained attention until it yields. This is structurally what a Zen practitioner does with a koan. The koan is a question engineered to defeat ordinary problem-solving, held until the holding itself produces a shift the intellect could not have reached by force. Einstein's thought experiments were questions of exactly that kind, held with exactly that discipline, and they reconfigured the physical picture of reality in the way a koan reconfigures the one who sits with it.
The founding period of quantum mechanics was more explicitly philosophical still. The exchange between Bohr and Einstein over the observer's role in determining quantum outcomes was philosophical work conducted in the vocabulary of physics. The questions were about the nature of measurement, the status of the observer, whether an unobserved system possesses definite properties at all. Non-locality and entanglement pushed further into territory that looks, from a certain angle, indistinguishable from questions the contemplative traditions have asked about the boundaries of the separate self, though the resemblance must be handled with care.
And here the care is essential. None of this means that physics has proven the traditions right. It has not. Entanglement is not enlightenment. Non-locality is not the dissolution of the ego. To claim otherwise is to commit exactly the error this dispatch has been trying to avoid, asking one framework to do the other's work and declaring victory when the vocabularies happen to rhyme. The point is narrower and more honest than that. The point is that theoretical physics has always been philosophy operating under specific constraints, that its foundational moves have always been conceptual before they were mathematical, and that the empirical reader who imagines physics is hard and philosophy is soft is unaware of how their own field's deepest work actually gets done. Naming this does not conscript physics into perennial territory. It names something that was already the case, and that physicists themselves have always known.
If this section does its work, the empirical reader finishes it thinking yes, that is honest about how physics actually functions, rather than this is trying to trick me into accepting mysticism. That is the whole aim. The bridge is not something the dispatch is building over open ground. It is something that has been present at the foundational level of physics the entire time.
VI. The traditions on the same problem
The mystical traditions have never been naive about the epistemic difficulty that Ellie faces before Congress. They have been sitting inside that exact difficulty for centuries, with their eyes open, and they have developed sophisticated responses to it.
Ramana Maharshi taught a method of self-inquiry that led, in his account and in the accounts of those who followed it, to a direct recognition that could not be transmitted as information. He could describe the path. He could not hand anyone the arrival. When pressed to prove what he claimed to have realized, he did not offer evidence. He pointed the questioner back toward their own inquiry, because the only available demonstration was the one the questioner would have to undergo themselves. This is not evasion. It is an accurate account of the epistemic situation. Some knowledge is constituted by the undergoing and cannot exist in any other form.
Sufism developed an entire literature around the impossibility of conveying the station to one who has not reached it, and around the danger of speaking of it at all to those who will inevitably misunderstand. The tradition's poetry is, in large part, a technology for gesturing at what cannot be stated, precisely because its practitioners knew that direct statement fails. They were not confused about whether their claims could be demonstrated to outsiders. They knew they could not. They built their forms around that knowledge.
The anonymous English author of The Cloud of Unknowing wrote, in the fourteenth century, an entire manual premised on the recognition that the object of contemplation cannot be reached by the knowing mind at all, that it lies behind a cloud through which only a particular kind of unknowing love can pass. This is a text explicitly organized around the failure of demonstrative knowledge. Its author was not hiding from the epistemic problem. The epistemic problem was the subject.
These traditions faced the wall from their side and told the truth about it. They did not pretend their claims were verifiable. They did not pretend the skeptic was foolish for withholding assent. They described a category of knowledge available only through transformation and honestly reported that it could not be handed across the wall.
And Ellie arrives at precisely this position from the opposite direction. She does not begin as a mystic. She begins as the most rigorous possible empiricist, a scientist who would have been the first to demand corroboration from anyone else making her claim. She is dragged to the edge of the traditions' territory not by belief but by an experience her own commitments will not let her deny. She ends up standing exactly where the contemplatives have always stood, holding a knowledge she cannot demonstrate, being asked to recant it, and declining. The traditions reached that spot through discipline and devotion. Ellie reached it through data and its aftermath. They are standing in the same place, having walked in from opposite sides.
VII. The bridge back, and the work ahead
This is not the first time the site has stood at this particular edge. Dispatch 13 walked toward the same territory from a different entry, taking seriously the possibility that the empirical door and the contemplative door might open onto the same room. Contact is another door onto that room, approached this time through a scientist's experience rather than through argument.
There is future work that belongs here and that the site will take up more fully in time, a dedicated engagement with this specific territory where empirical inquiry and contemplative inquiry press against their shared boundary. This dispatch marks the edge without yet building on it. The fuller treatment is coming. For now it is enough to name that Contact sits on the same line Dispatch 13 was tracing, and that the line continues past where either has yet gone.
VIII. The monomyth Sagan did not intend
There is one more thing the film is doing, and it is doing it without having meant to.
Ellie's arc is the monomyth, cleanly and completely. Her ordinary world is the marginalized SETI research that has cost her standing among her peers. Her call to adventure is the signal from Vega. Her refusal is not internal but external, embodied in the institutions and rivals who try to take the work from her. Her mentors and allies are scattered across several figures, the blind colleague who hears the signal's structure before anyone sees it, the reclusive industrialist who plays a distorted mentor's role, the one man who comes to understand what she has undergone. Her threshold crossing is entering the machine. Her road of trials is the eighteen hours in the wormhole, which is itself a sequence of specific encounters, the passage, the strange shore, the meeting with the alien wearing her father's face. Her transformation happens in that meeting. Her boon is what she carries back, which is not a fact she can prove but a certainty she cannot shake. Her return is her arrival back in the pod, apparently unmoved, having lived what registered to observers as an instant. Her testimony before Congress is the specific difficulty of the return, the one who has crossed over trying to communicate what she received to a world that did not cross with her.
And then, crucially, she goes back to work. She does not become a mystic or a preacher. She continues to be a scientist. She keeps searching. She keeps teaching the children who come to the observatory. This is the completion of the monomyth, the return of the boon to the ordinary world, and it is the specific move that makes Contact a completed hero's journey rather than a truncated one. Ellie carries the transformation inside the scientific vocation rather than against it. Her work now includes what she cannot prove, but the work continues in the same form it took before. She has not left science. She has brought something into science that science, in its current form, cannot fully accommodate.
Sagan almost certainly did not set out to write a monomyth. He was working from his own philosophical concerns, asking what would happen if the framework he had defended his whole life encountered something it could not accommodate. He built Ellie as a way of working that question out. The monomyth arrived anyway.
And that is the point worth naming plainly, because it strengthens something this site has been arguing across the whole pop culture arc. The monomyth is not a template that writers apply to their material. It is what happens when material is engaged seriously enough that its own shape emerges. Sagan built Contact from philosophical first principles about consciousness and knowledge and the specific tension between empirical and personal ways of knowing. The story of a character undergoing that engagement, honestly rendered, became a monomyth because that is what the story actually is at the level of its structure. This is Joseph Campbell's whole argument in miniature. The pattern appears wherever a story is being told about consciousness meeting itself through difficult transformation. When Sagan tried to tell the story of what would happen if his framework met what it could not hold, he was telling a story about consciousness meeting itself, and the shape followed.
The traditions have always claimed that the recognitions do not belong to them. They belong to consciousness, and they surface wherever consciousness engages its own difficulties seriously enough. Contact demonstrates this precisely. Sagan was as far from perennial religious tradition as a serious twentieth-century intellectual could be. He wrote a monomyth anyway, because he was writing, honestly, about consciousness meeting itself. The shape of the story is not evidence of religious inclination. It is evidence of serious engagement with the specific difficulties of consciousness. Sagan proves this by having produced the pattern without believing anything the traditions believe.
This is the through line that ties the arc together. Lateralus was made by artists who took the philosophical material seriously and built the monomyth deliberately. Arrival engaged philosophically serious source material and produced the monomyth as a consequence of the engagement. Contact takes the argument all the way. A rigorous scientific skeptic produced the pattern without intending to, because he was engaging the material honestly. The pattern is not proof of faith. It is proof of depth.

Ellie goes back to the observatory. She sits with the children and points them at the sky and tells them what is known and what is not, and she carries inside her, unresolved and unprovable, the thing she was given and cannot pass across the wall. She does not force the resolution. Neither did the film. Neither does the tradition, at its most serious, ask its practitioners to force it. Sitting with a tension rather than collapsing it is exactly what the contemplatives have always required of their deepest students, and it is exactly what serious science requires of its most careful workers when they arrive at the limits of what their instruments can measure.
The place where the two of them meet is not a doctrine. It is prior to doctrine. Scientists become scientists because they are awestruck. Contemplatives pursue their work because they are awestruck. The awe is not divided by which framework a person then builds to house it. The awe comes first. The frameworks are what different temperaments do with the same original encounter. And that encounter, the wonder that precedes and animates all serious inquiry, is the one ground both slopes rise from.
Sagan spent his life saying this in his own vocabulary, and Silva said it in his:
"We fit the universe through our brains, and it comes out in the form of nothing less than poetry. We have a responsibility to awe."— Jason Silva
