The Cosmic Giggle

Commentary
Ram Dass identified the cosmic giggle with his guru, Maharaj-ji, whose laughter he described as neither social nor personal but a chuckle that seemed to come from outside the whole arrangement. He placed it at the top of a ladder of humor: survival, gratification, power, and above them all a humor filled with compassion.
The mechanism is one nearly everyone has felt. There is a critical point where a situation gets so bad that its absurdity overwhelms you, and at that moment you up-level your predicament and see the cosmic joke in your own suffering. Nothing about the situation changes. Your position relative to it does. The giggle is the sound of seeing the whole drama from a height at which it is no longer tragic.
Crucially, this is not detachment or contempt. The top rung of the ladder is compassion: the Buddha smiles because he sees that all beings are lost in illusion yet will awaken, since at heart they are already free. The comedy and the compassion are the same perception.
