The dangerous sentence

Mansur al-Hallaj, ninth-century Sufi, says it in Arabic and is executed for saying it out loud.

The reading — Al-Hallaj & Ibn Arabi (9th–13th century)

Ana al-Haqq — I Am the Truth

Al-Hallaj cried “Ana al-Haqq!” — I am the Truth! — and was crucified in Baghdad in 922 CE. Tradition holds this utterance as the reason; scholars have questioned whether the causes were that simple.

From his prison cell, before his execution: “Kill me, O my trustworthy friends, for in my death is my life. My death is in my life, and my life is in my death.”

Ibn Arabi, two centuries later, called this Wahdat al-Wujud — the Unity of Being: “The cosmos is the self-disclosure of the Real. There is nothing in existence except God.”

And: “Do not attach yourself to any particular creed exclusively, so that you may disbelieve all the rest; otherwise you will lose much good, nay, you will fail to recognize the real truth of the matter.”

The framing

Ana al-Haqq. I am the Truth. Al-Hallaj is using one of the ninety-nine names of God in Islam and applying it to himself. In the Baghdad of his time, this was indistinguishable from blasphemy. He was executed for it.

It is worth holding the political weight of this sentence next to its content. Al-Hallaj was not claiming to be more than human. He was claiming, in the Sufi vocabulary, exactly what Eckhart was claiming in the Christian one and what the Chandogya was claiming in the Sanskrit one: that the wave does not stand apart from the ocean.
